A Report of the Future of Latinos Project (UC Davis)
As of 2014, the state of California became home to a quarter of the Latinx population nationwide and Latinx representation now surpasses White representation in California. This paper demonstrates that these growing demographics do not necessarily equate with increasing opportunity. This paper is divided into three sections. Section 1 assesses demographic trends of the Latinx population in California from 2010-2015. Section 2 explores four policy levers relating to the Latix community: immigration, educational opportunity, economic vitality, and electoral participation. The final section synthesizes the main obstacles Latinx face as they seek the benefits of full social equality and the opportunities available for researchers, advocates, and politicians as they assist this population in pursuing those benefits.
