Judge Albert Diaz, North Carolina Fellow, became the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit on July 9th, 2023. In assuming this role, he became the eleventh chief judge and the first Hispanic judge to served the Fourth Circuit as chief.
Judge Diaz was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 2010 by President Barack Obama. Before his appointment, he served on North Carolina Superior Court bench, including service on North Carolina’s Business Court.
In the Marines, he served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and appellate government counsel. He continued his service in the Marine Reserves, serving as appellate defense counsel, military trial judge, and appellate military judge. He retired from the Marines in 2006 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
