Fred D. Gray, Alabama Life Fellow, will be presented with the 2023 ABA Medal at the Annual Meeting in Denver on August 5th. Mr. Gray was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom last year, in July 2022.
The ABA Medal was established to honor a member of the bench or bar whose career has had a striking impact to the cause of American jurisprudence. Past award winners include Life Fellow Justice Stephen G. Breyer, Philanthropist Fellow William H. Neukom, and Patron Fellow Roberta Cooper Ramo, among others.
Currently Mr. Gray is the senior managing shareholder in the law firm of Gray, Langford, Sapp, McGowan, Gray, Gray & Nathanson P.C. Gray entered private practice in Montgomery and Tuskegee, Alabama in 1954, after earning his law degree from Case Western Reserve University. He represented Rosa Parks in 1955 after her arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus and went on to serve as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s first civil rights attorney.
