Featured Keynote: “Real Jury Deliberations: Inside the Black Box” with Shari Seidman Diamond (ABF Research Professor; Howard J. Trienens Professor of Law & Professor of Psychology, Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law)
What do jurors do during deliberations? Professor Diamond and her colleagues, with the permission of the Arizona Supreme Court and support from the American Bar Foundation, videotaped deliberations of fifty real juries in Arizona civil cases to answer a variety of theoretical and policy-related questions about the jury, and to construct an in-depth picture of the deliberating jury. She will discuss how deliberations shape verdicts, including topics such as the influence of juror questions; the meaning of “common sense” in the jury room; juror reactions to experts; how jurors handle jury instructions; and the process of persuasion and compromise.
Cocktails served from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
